About the Role

The Director of Communications will help realize CodePath’s vision to be recognized as the leading organization to create tomorrow’s technology leaders, builders, and founders while closing the racial equity gap. You will shape our communications strategy and narrative as we share our story in transforming computer science education and the stories of our 10,000+ students who have overcome systemic barriers to gain pathways to the tech industry.

As a member of the Marketing team, you will build and lead external communications for CodePath. You will work closely with Marketing, leadership, fundraising, and others across the US to help us develop an effective communications narrative, and you will source new opportunities for CodePath to expand our reach and influence through effective storytelling. The content you create will convince impact leaders to fund our programs to drive systemic change in tech, compel hiring leaders to forge new partnerships with us, and drive more college computer science students to enroll in our industry-backed courses.

We are looking for someone who has the prowess to secure mainstream media coverage but also embraces new and unique approaches to content development and distribution.

This full-time role reports directly to the Head of Marketing

About CodePath is a 501 (c)(3) nonprofit transforming computer science education for underrepresented minorities at over 60 colleges and universities, doubling in size every semester.

Close to 80% of minorities who start a CS degree will leave CS before graduating. For those who do graduate, most will have skill gaps making them likely to leave software engineering roles or spend their careers underestimated and underemployed. By working closely with major technology companies like Cognizant, Comcast, Facebook, Microsoft, and Walmart, is changing CS programs nationwide to increase diversity in tech.

Students often tell us that our industry-trusted, project-based courses are their favorite CS experiences. Professors love that we handle curriculum updates, grading, and student technical support. Best of all, our courses are free for students and universities making us the first organization to offer multi-year, in-person technical education at scale and completely free.


Key Activities

  • Develop the overall messaging and content strategy for CodePath in conjunction with the leadership team. As the audience expert, you’ll guide messaging to deliver the greatest impact and resonance

  • In collaboration with our PR and media relations partner, lead a robust media relations function, delivering exceptional results by nurturing strong relationships with broadcast, technology, business, and HR outlets

  • Develop the strategies and tactics with measurable results to build both corporate/foundations and student brand awareness, i.e.
    • Lead B2B content marketing to keep CodePath top-of-mind in front of employer partners (Engineering and HR leaders) and corporate donors (i.e. student stories, case studies, infographics, thought leadership articles and research studies, speaking opportunities, etc.)

    • Lead B2C content development to keep CodePath top-of-mind in front of underserved college computer science students who are trying to break into and excel in the industry (i.e. YouTube video series, blog articles about our students’ achievements, video documentaries about our students’ personal stories, etc.)

  • Partner with the Head of Marketing to establish the CodePath brand voice, create brand messaging/style guidelines and collaborate with the rest of the organization to ensure our brand themes are consistently communicated across various campaigns and channels

  • Own the branded corporate social media channels including Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, Instagram

  • Partner with CodePath’s leadership team and build out the spokespersons bench, leading the development of talking points, interactions with the media, and presentations at major conferences

  • Establish a process to review and approve all content before they go live

  • Create, implement and maintain analytics dashboards to measure impact. Report results to senior leadership on a regular basis

Note: You will have the ability to source and manage a team of contractors and freelancers of writers, filmmakers, video editors, and other creatives to create and execute your vision/plan


  • Minimum 7 years of experience in PR, communications, and marketing

  • Demonstrated experience leading communication and content with an insights-led approach and results to back it up. Prior experience working in technology and/or education is a plus

  • Passionate and instinctive storyteller with excellent content-generation skills across a variety of channels—and a knack for distilling complex stories into a simple yet compelling narrative

  • An open and effective communicator across different audiences (i.e. college students vs. leadership), both internally and externally

  • Exceptional project management skills, attention to detail, and ability to juggle multiple competing priorities effectively

  • Strong quantitative, analytical, and problem-solving skills

  • Technical proficiency a major plus (i.e. former CS student, has coding/programming experience or a tech enthusiast, i.e. you enjoy reading WIRED magazine and immersing yourself in the latest tech trends)

  • Tech nonprofit or startup experience is also a plus
