Job Description: SITE Lead Instructor

Reporting to: Head of Programs

About the Role

Our SITE Lead Instructors are passionate educators and technologists who are deeply invested in providing opportunities for students identifying with underrepresented groups in tech. SITE instructors are responsible for the overall in-class experience of participants in the CodePath Summer Internship for Tech Excellence program. They deliver lessons, facilitate collaborative lab sessions, and support students in designing and executing their own original projects. The pre-internship instructor role is a full-time 10-week commitment during the summer, plus an additional 30 hours of training during the spring (the goals of this training will be to help the instructor get more familiar with the curriculum, get to know other members of the instructional team, and better understand the program and instructional model). Because this is the first year of the SITE program, we anticipate our SITE instructors playing a crucial role in providing feedback to our program and curriculum teams to adjust and iterate on the curriculum and overall program model.

SITE Lead Instructors will need to be available during the following dates/time:

• May 8 - 31 (up to 30 hours total, dates/times TBD): Training
• June 7 - August 13 8:00am - 4:00pm PST: Program dates
• August 16 - 20 (up to 40 hours total): Wrap-up and report-writing.

About Us 

CodePath.org is an early-stage nonprofit dedicated to offering an accelerated pathway into the technology industry for college students all across the US, with an emphasis on serving underserved, low-income, and first-generation students. We offer a variety of courses and services to students both directly on-campuses at colleges and remotely using video classrooms with instructors and TAs. All of these courses and services are offered to students entirely for free, funded directly by the technology industry in order to invest in the next generation of talented software engineers.

CodePath.org provides curriculum and programs for college students all across the United States, often offered for-credit at campuses, including at many HBCUs, HSIs, women’s colleges, and state colleges. Key Activities

• Lead technical workshops 3 - 4 times per week to teach students the fundamentals of web development using React.js, Node.js, Express.js, and PostgreSQL.
• Facilitate a variety of working session types including morning stand-up, extended group project worktimes, and just-in-time reinforcement sessions based on student needs.
• Serve as the primary instructional point of contact for interns in the program
• Adapt and create instructional materials from the course curriculum provided, and provide meaningful feedback to our curriculum team as the course progresses.
• Develop strong relationships with program participants to support their growth and development throughout the program.
• Manage the instructional team (consisting of 4 - 6 TAs, and a variety of industry-based co-instructors).

Qualifications

• 2+ years of classroom experience with a demonstrated track record of educational excellence, ideally in a CS/STEM field and ideally at a high school or college level.
• 2+ years of instructional experience with a demonstrated track record of educational excellence.
• Computer science (or related field) degree, or comparable experience working in/learning software development
• Strong understanding of core technologies: React.js, Node.js, and foundational database knowledge. Our ideal candidate will have familiarity with both relational (e.g. PostgreSQL, MySQL, etc.) and document databases (e.g. MongoDB).
• Formal experience working as a web developer in core technologies a plus.
• Experience developing technical curriculum (and interest in playing a role in the development process of the SITE curriculum) a plus
• Experience working through shifting priorities and learning, while maintaining organization and control
• Tech nonprofit, startup experience a plus
